Do you ever feel like you have a bad taste in your mouth or bad breath? Have you had people discreetly back away from you while you’re talking? Well, if you have…you’re not alone.

Bad breath is a tough issue that affects millions of people, including up to half of middle-aged and older adults. It can be a constant source of worry and concern, along with the stigma associated with the problem. Even your best friend won’t tell you if you have offensive breath. It can affect not only your personal life, but your social and business life as well.

So what can you do about this very common issue? Try these.

Five Solutions to Help Prevent Bad Breath

  1. Change a personal habit. Did you know that using tobacco and drinking alcohol are both known to cause bad breath? If you need another reason to quit, do it now. When you do, the chances of reducing breath odor increases. Eating strong foods like cheese or onions can also contribute to the problem.
  2. Control dry mouth. Certain drugs or persistent medical conditions may cause dry mouth. Without adequate saliva flow, bacteria can multiply in the mouth, resulting in unpleasant odors. As a remedy, try drinking plenty of water or chewing Xylitol gum to stimulate saliva production.
  3. Treat your tongue. Another source of bad breath is your tongue. Over time, bacteria and food debris develops on the rough surface of the tongue, and as it decays, it can be a source of odor. The best remedy is to use a tongue scraper made specifically for this job. A toothbrush just won’t do the trick, and those breath mints are just a cover up that masks the problem.
  4. Get a professional cleaning. If it’s been a while since you’ve visited the dentist, it may be time to schedule an appointment. Intermittent dental visits are a big culprit of bacteria build-up that can cause odor. I can remove the hardened layers of bacteria-laden biofilm to help reduce the cause of bad breath.
  5. Improve your oral hygiene. On a day-to-day basis, it’s up to you to keep the bacteria in your mouth under control and to keep your breath smelling fresh. That means proper brushing, flossing, and using a mouth rinse every day.

If, after following these potential solutions to help reduce the symptoms, you are still having difficulty with your breath, by all means—come in for a check up . I’m happy to conduct a complete examination to find out exactly where the problem is coming from. From there, we can come up with a solution that will help you control it.

Your family and friends will thank you for it.

Dr. Zanni is fabulous— as a dentist, as a doctor, as a compassionate caregiver. New to the area, I had no dentist yet when a front tooth broke unexpectedly on a Sunday night. I found Dr. Zanni on google and called his emergency phone number. To my surprise, he answered after 2 rings and began helping me immediately, despite the fact that not only was I not a patient of his, but a total stranger. Although he was out of town, he offered to see me after office hours when he returned the next day. As promised, he met me at his office, took a meticulous cast of my teeth, and by Tuesday afternoon—less than 48 hours after my tooth broke—he had created a new one for me with dental bonding. It was such a perfect piece of work that you'd never know that the tooth had broken at all and that half of it was not my real tooth. I was relieved, impressed with his skill, and very grateful for his kind, swift, successful solution. Later in the week I returned for a long overdue cleaning and received a top-notch dental evaluation from Dr. Zanni that provided me with far more information and insight about not just my oral health but how it related to sleep and headache history than I've ever had before. Dr. Zanni is a personable, caring, and thorough doctor, and I'm very glad to have found him. I highly recommend him and his excellent staff, who are very much like him in skill and professionalism.

I am a long-time patient of Dr. Zanni and would highly recommend him and his staff to anyone looking for a great dentist. He is very thorough and thoughtful and most important - available when needed. Emergencies do occur - everyone associated with this practice will put themselves out to accommodate you and your family. Also, of great importance in this day and age - your appointments run on time!!!
